A state-run care home in the Kannur district in Kerala, India, has taken an inspiring step of making handwash for personal use as well as for distribution to other organisations in the state to combat the impact of COVID-19.

In this video, you can see the steps taken by this care home to shield its residents against the virus. The first measure taken was stopping visitors into the home to help reduce the exposure to the virus. The superintendent of the home–Mohanan Bharghavan–then established a cleaning station at the entrance of the care home for the employees and “urgent visitors”.

The care home also has undergone disinfection using fogging and spraying of sodium hypochlorite with the help of the district fire-force unit. To boost the immunity of the residents of the care home, vitamin-rich diet is being provided.

However, the most important activity during this crisis undertaken by the residents is the making of a handwash. This was done as a sign of social commitments, says Mohanan. This handwash is now being provided to health workers and government officials.

The initiative is a sign of older people being active in the fight against COVID-19 and contributing to society.
