WEBINAR: Human Rights Of Older Persons In The Age Of COVID-19 And Beyond
When: Tuesday 12 May 2:00- 3:00 pm Geneva time/ 08:00-09:00 am New York time.
Older persons are at high risk of severe illness and death following infection from COVID-19. Many countries adopted a variety of measures to curtail these grim outlooks. While these measures were well-intended and aimed at greater protection, care and support for older persons, they have in many ways negatively impacted their rights and freedoms.
Have some COVID-19 measures impacted older persons to a larger degree than other groups? Have the views of older persons been taken into account? Have they highlighted the already existing ageism and age-based discrimination?
The UN Secretary-General policy brief on the impact of COVID 19 on older persons clearly calls to strengthen the legal frameworks to promote and protect the human rights and dignity of older persons.
In this virtual meeting, Geneva NGO Committee on Ageing will analyse the current situation and will look forward. How can we advance the conversation around the rights of older persons during these challenging times and how we can move from debate to action?
Ms Claudia Mahler, the new Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons.
Ms Michelle Bachelet, High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Representatives Member States in the Groups of Friends of the rights of older persons in New York and Geneva.
